3-4pm: Graduating Student Presentation: Weaving New Structures for Hope (Together)

    Speakers: Rebecca Novick
"My artistic work has always spiraled through embodiment, trauma, identity, activism. Each time I’ve traveled around the spiral I’ve understood more and seen  more clearly how each area connects. At the center of the spiral is my driving question and the center of my work at Goddard – how do I tell the stories I’m meant to tell? My thesis travels several turns of the spiral, each time passing through the question of identity and what stories are mine to tell, the challenge of how to structure these stories, and my ongoing quest to figure out how to make a difference in the world as an artist. Ultimately, I’ve discovered that creating opportunities for groups of people to make meaning together is the center of my work. The “art of gathering” is an art of paying attention to energy, to the way a group’s energy can be shifted and shaped in service of what you’re making together. The weaving of collaborations large and small is the way I want to tell stories now. In this workshop I will share some of my writing and performance work and then we will weave a new story together, taking time to share what we’ve all carried through this challenging time."
